Pawn
A Pawn

This is a Pawn. A Pawn has the ability to move 1 space forward, or 2 spaces forward but only when it’s in starting position. After the Pawn is no longer in starting position, it can only move one space forward.

Below, the movement of a Pawn is represented. The red arrows indicate where and how far the Pawn will move from starting position.

Pawn Movement 1A

Pawn Movement 1A
A pawn from starting position moved 1 space forward
Pawn Movement 2A
A Pawn in starting position
Pawn movement 2A
A Pawn from starting position moved 2 spaces forward

The Pawn cannot proceed forward if there is a piece of either black or white blocking it’s path.

The Pawn can only capture other pieces if they’re within 1 space forward  to the left or right. Another way of thinking about how the Pawn captures would be “diagonal” to the left or right 1 space.

An example is shown below.

The Pawn can also perform a special move titled En Passant and is also the only piece that can be Promoted, as well as the only piece that can’t move backwards.
